Jack Ox is the visual artist half of a collaborative team consisting of herself and David Britton, programmer. She will talk about the development of their virtual reality immersive project called “The 21st C. Virtual Color Organ” The Organ is an instrument which can visualize different musical compositions. It can be outfitted with different color and image systems, depending on the different needs of various compositions. Ox will describe “Im Januar am Nil” by Clarence Barlow ,a computer assisted composition based mathematically on a 2 dimenstional spiral and played by chamber orchestra. She will also talk about the currently in progress collaboration with Alvin Curran called “Gridjam”, which will be performed by geographically separated musicians inside their own immersive environment.

Jack Ox has been working on the visualization of music for over 20 years, including studies and research in musicology and phonetics. While making her 800 sq.’ visualization of Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonate, a sound poem in sonata form, she came upon and caused to be published on WERGO (Mainz, Germany) an original, unknown performance by Kurt Schwitters. The complete Ursonate will be shown in the Muzeum Sztuki, Lodz, Poland in 2002. She was in Vom Klang der Bilder, Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart.1985, made an Ursonate presentation at the Centre Georges Pompidou during the 1994 Schwitters retrospective, and exhibited the 12 painting series of Anton Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony in 1996 at the Neue Galerie der Stadt, Linz, Austria. Parts of her Ursonate installation have been exhibited at (among others) SoundCulture’96, S.F., CA, and at the Podewil, Berlin in 1998. Ox’s electronic version of the Ursonate can be seen at @art, an electronic art gallery affiliated with the School of Art and Design, the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, and was created in collaboration with its students and faculty. http://www.art.uiuc.edu/@art/main.html. Ox has been on the editorial board of Leonardo for over 10 years, was guest editor with Jacques Mandelbrojt of a special section, Synesthesia and Intersense, and is on the BOD of Art and Science Collaboration, Inc. . Her collaborative project with David Britton, the 21stC. Virtual Reality Color Organ http://www.jackox.net has received support from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Boston U., Silcon Graphics., EAI, Ars Electronica, and was a visiting fellow in the department of Computer Science, Lutchi Research Centre, Loughborough U., UK. She has given papers at MIT, Center for Advanced Visual Studies, the U. of New Mexico, the International Conference on Complex Systems, AllianceChautauqua 99, Boston U., ART Sci 99, L” Intersens, Laboratoire Musique et Informatique de Marseille, and the Digital Arts Conference at Brown University.. In Feb., 2001 she participated in the exhibition Between Sound and Vision, Gallery 400, UIC. Ox co-chaired a panelwith Paul Hertz at Siggraph2001, and will also do so at ISEA01 in Nagoya Japan.
